  2. The computer has several timing
  3. crystals which keep its thinking
  4. organized. One is also used to keep
  5. track of the time and date.  Many
  6. computers also have a small
  7. rechargeable battery and an IC chip
  8. that keeps track of the time even
  9. when the main power switch is
  10. turned off.  This small part of the
  11. computer is always awake.

  16.    The timing crystal puts out an
  17. electronic tick, tick, tick at a
  18. very high rate of speed. The timing
  19. chip adds these ticks to the time
  20. and date.  The battery keeps this
  21. going. Whenever the computer is
  22. turned on, the battery is recharged.

  27.    The computer loads a program
  28. from a disk into the RAM.  Hard
  29. disk usually spin at 3600
  30. revolutions per minute and
  31. floppies run at 300 RPM. The
  32. hard disk can hold more
  33. information than a floppy, but
  34. their principal of operation is
  35. the same.

  39.     The surfaces of a disk are
  40. coated or plated with a magnetic
  41. metal.  A small recording head
  42. is placed very near each
  43. surface. The head can be moved
  44. in and out along the radius of
  45. the disk, so that it can read or
  46. write along any of many tracks,
  47. called cylinders.
